APPLE CRISP FOR MY CHILDREN

This post is primarily for my kids to look in on whenever they want to make apple crisp. It's one of their favorite desserts and they love the way I make it. To be honest, I don't have a recipe, just a process so I made this one for them and tracked the amounts. Well, kinda!

Peel and core 16 Granny Smith apples. Use Grannys because they stay firm and hold their shape after being baked unlike many other apples.

Slice apples into bite sized wedges into a mixing bowl.

Add 2 cups brown sugar, 1 cup flour, 1 tbsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tsp vanilla extract and the juice of one lemon. Mix thoroughly.

Add one cup of raisins and mix thoroughly.

Transfer apple mixture to a baking dish. I used a 12" x 12" pan.

For the crumble topping, combine 2 cups of quick cooking oats with 1 cup of flour. Mix well. Add 1 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of salt and mix well again. Add 1/2 lb of soft butter and knead into the dry mixture well.

Spread crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the pan and bake @ 350 degrees for about one hour.

Serve with French vanilla ice cream or Creme Anglaise.

One of my all time favorite desserts from childhood. It's always been made for me and I've never attempted to make it myself but I will be trying this recipe as soon as I get back from the grocery store, keep your fingers crossed.

Marko!

I tried you're apple crisp and I am happy to report that it was a success. Pretty fail proof if you ask me. I forgot to get the nutmeg but it still turned out smashingly. I'm sitting here with a glass of milk, a bowl full of apple crisp and some vanilla ice cream and I couldn't be any happier.

Well...that's a nice surprise Felix. I'm glad you did. And nutmeg be damned!

Yes, apple crisp is simple and very much like apple pie. I like it because it's quick as well.

Take care and enjoy your apple crisp!!

Cynthia:

Creme Anglaise is the French term for English Cream and it is simply a custard sauce made from egg yolks, white sugar, cream and vanilla.

As far as buying it in the store...no you won't find it there. And as far as a recipe, yes...I have one.

Would you like me to do a post on how to make it?

Let me know....

Wow, you would do a post on it? yes please. I first thought Creme Anglaise was a heavier sour cream of some sort. If you could post it that would be great.thanks kindly.
